The Alley
Since the 1920’s, Hogan’s Alley was known as Vancouver’s red light district located at the edge of Chinatown. A sub-neighbourhood whose personality was defined by makeshift nightclubs, illegal gambling and bootlegging, it was known as a vivacious and diverse community and was considered the city’s only black neighbourhood. Unfortunately, the livelihood of Hogan’s Alley disappeared in the 1960’s when it was disassembled for urban planning.
The Alley hostel & pub serves as a communal hub for both locals and travelers to experience and celebrate the rich stories that Vancouver has to offer. The rustic identity, as well as the use of a gritty pattern and old photographs, commemorates the forgotten history and helps the brand communicate its story. The format of the designs keeps the budget of a small business in mind and the ad campaigns support word-of-mouth communications, while the brand as a whole highlights the narratives of Hogan’s Alley.
